Project ABLE (A Better Life Experience) is a non-profit organization that utilizes peer designed and delivered support for individuals with mental health and/or co-occurring (mental illness plus addiction) issues. We have been incorporated and operating since October of 2003 in Salem, Oregon.
The purpose of Project ABLE is to reduce stigma and empower recovery through education programs that share information, support programs that build confidence and leadership roles that promote self-efficacy.
Philosophically, ABLE is a possibility oriented, rather than problem oriented, organization that champions the hope and promise of recovery for everyone.
The vision of Project ABLE is to provide the organizational structure through which consumers can create, direct and deliver peer-to-peer services. Peer-to-peer services under the umbrella of Project ABLE are specific and targeted on goals for providing:
- Opportunities for personal learning and growth
- Opportunities for camaraderie and mutual support
- Opportunities for community and service to other consumers
- Services that promote healing through an acknowledgment and celebration of an individual's strengths, resiliencies, talents, autonomy and inherent worth
- Opportunities to develop and train consumer leadership
- Collaboration with other peer, provider and community organizations
- Opportunities for other diverse and meaningful community roles and relationships.
